2013-2014 NHL Regular Season Standings Predictions

It’s hard to believe it but hockey returns tomorrow. With the Stanley Cup final ending late because of the lockout and the Olympics bumping this regular season up a few days, it was a shorter summer than normal for hockey fans. For the first time in two years there will be games in October, November and December. The 48-game season was nice because every game was important, and now it’s back to the 82-game grind where there will be more adversity and injuries. Add in a long Olympic break and anything can happen this season. Here are my predictions of how I see the regular season ending.

Atlantic Division: I think Detroit will make an immediate splash in a new division. After striking out on every relevant free agent in 2012, the Red Wings added Daniel Alfredsson and Stephen Weiss, and their young defenders will get better. Ottawa lost their captain in Alfredsson, but added Bobby Ryan. They are a well-coached team that will overachieve. Having Jason Spezza and Erik Karlsson healthy will be huge. The Bruins will regret the Tyler Seguin trade but still make the playoffs. Speaking of offseason errors, Toronto will be second guessing the David Clarkson signing and Tyler Bozak resigning at the end of the season. I think Jonathan Bernier will have a strong season but the Leafs won’t return to the playoffs

1. Detroit Red Wings

2. Ottawa Senators

3. Boston Bruins

4. Montreal Canadiens

5. Tampa Bay Lightning

6. Toronto Maple Leafs

7. Buffalo Sabres

8. Florida Panthers  Continue reading

NFL Picks: Week 4 Thursday Night

49ers -3.5 over Rams

I will make this a two-star pick. I think the 49ers win and cover in a low scoring game. It didn’t happen last week, but San Francisco usually bounces back strong after a loss. I think in a division game, they will be focused and their defense will play a lot better. I watched the entire Rams game last week and their offense was terrible. Now they play on a short week, which is a disadvantage to their offense. The only thing holding me back from making this a three-star pick is that the Rams finished 4-1-1 against their division last season and Jeff Fisher always motivates his team to play in those games.  Continue reading

NFL Picks: Week 4 Early Look

We get an idea of how good or bad each team is after the first three weeks in the NFL season. A lot of people overreact after one game and the next few weeks are different. The perfect example is the Philadelphia Eagles. Everyone watched them dominate the Washington Redskins for one half on Monday Night Football in Week 1. They held on to beat the Redskins but then lost straight up to the Chargers and Chiefs at home.

Here is a early outlook for lines in Week 4 (lines as of Monday night). I will add what I think the line should be. Under the Week 4 games I will rank the 32 teams based on rankings against the spread.

49ers -3 @ Rams

My line: 49ers -5.5 (Aldon Smith and Patrick Willis might not play so this will probably change)

Steelers -1 vs. Vikings in London

My line: Steelers -2

Ravens -3.5 @ Bills

My line: Ravens -3.5

Bengals -5.5 @ Browns

My line: Bengals -3.5
